LED Lighting - The Basics

LED technology has come a long way in the past 2 years making it a far more efficient lighting alternative. On average LED bulbs and fixtures consume about 50% to 60% less electricity as their fluorescent equivalents, and between 75%-80% less than their dated metal halide or high pressure sodium equivalents. Additionally, LED technology will last 82.5% longer than fluorescent and 90% longer than metal halide resulting in lower maintenance costs.

There are two ways to light with LED. The most common LED solution is replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs in the same way that we transitioned from incandescent to fluorescent bulbs. This tends to be a more inexpensive solution ideal for residential or small retail applications. The less common but more efficient LED lighting solution are integrated fixtures. These are fixtures that are specially designed to address the specific performance needs of high output LEDs.

Most integrated LED fixtures have a higher lumen to watt ratio permitting a previously unheard of 130 lumens/watt efficacy. With built in heat sink technology, integrated LED fixtures can last up to 75% longer than LED bulbs making integrated fixtures an ideal solution for facilities with long operation hours and high luminous flux requirements such as warehouses, manufacturing centers, parking lots or garages, and gyms or sporting facilities. Facilities such as these that have switched to LED usually see a return on investment within 2 to 3 years.

LED is Cost Effective:

  • Are more energy efficient
  • Have longer lifetime
  • Require less maintenance
  • Need to be replaced less frequently than conventional light sources

LED is Versatile:

  • LEDs can be focused on a specific area as they are directional in nature
  • You can create mullions of colors, color temperatures, and lighting effects in a single luminaire.

LED is User Friendly:

  • Can be turned on and off instantly
  • Do not require to be turned on early to warm up
  • There is no re-strike or re-start time required
  • Can easily dimmed thereby reducing the wattage requirement and increasing functionality
  • Have excellent CRI performances

LED is Excellent for cold Temperatures and Outdoor Applications:

  • Operate in extremely cold temperatures (as low as -40°C
  • Withstand impact of vibrations
