The copper shortage during the 1960s housing boom caused builders to begin using aluminum wire as a substitute. Unfortunately, with time aluminum wiring can increase the resistance to the flow of electric current which in turn may cause overheating and become a fire hazard. Studies conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) concluded that homes wired with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to reach fire hazard conditions than homes wired with copper.
The CPSC does not recommend non COPALUM crimp connectors since they have not been properly evaluated. Twist-on connectors are also not recommended as tests have shown them to be susceptible to overheating and may be prone to even more failures than the original aluminum wire connectors. Another method that has failed in laboratory tests is the implementation of CO/ALR switches and receptacles.
The CPSC only approves of three methods for permanent repair:
- Complete Replacement of Copper Cable
- COPALUM Method of Repair
- AlumiCon Connectors
Rewiring your home with copper wiring can be a big and expensive job. The COPALUM method pigtails a short section of copper wire to the ends of the aluminum wire at connection point, and requires specialized tools and training by the manufacturer, as a result this method can also become cost prohibitive.
Fortunately, the American wire connector manufacturer, King Innovation based in Missouri, has developed an inexpensive and effective solution: AlumiConn wire connectors. The AlumiConn method involves pigtailing using a setscrew type connector. When conducted by a qualified electrician, AlumiConn wire connectors are an excellent solution to aluminum wiring.
