Once relegated to basements, garages and commercial buildings, fluorescent light fixtures are becoming increasingly popular in all areas of the home. The main reason is efficiency: fluorescent bulbs are much more economical than incandescent bulbs, which convert a lot of electricity into wasted and unwanted heat. The traditional complaints to fluorescent fixtures have typically been the cool, unnatural quality of light they emit, the low buzz that comes from the ballast and the lack of design options. The light quality issue has been addressed by choosing warmer light bulbs that provide the same color temperature as natural light. The buzzing has been eliminated by the transition to electronic fluorescent ballasts. The aesthetic issues are improving as the number of Fluorescent Light troffers and diffuser options has expanded. Most Fluorescent Light fixtures for the home are either 2 ft. or 4 ft. long.
How To Install A Fluorescent Light Fixture
- Turn power off.
- Run the feed cable from the switch through the hole in the ceiling at the ceiling outlet box location.
- Thread the cable through a knockout in the top of the fixture and a cable clamp.
- Attach the fixture to the ceiling by driving screws up though the top of the unit and into the ceiling joists.
- Once the Fluorescent Light fixture body is secured to the ceiling, go ahead and tighten the cable clamp.
- Make the wire connections, twisting the white neutral together with the white fixture wire and the black hot together with the black fixture wire.
- Attach the wire way cover to the Fluorescent Light fixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions and complete any other assembly requirements.
